Gangster

A movie had to be a part of the long weekend...GANGSTER it was!!!

Mahesh Bhatt lives upto his reputation with this latest presentation...unlike its title the movie has little to do with "gangsters"...its essentially a love story...very sensitive and touching...

Without indulging into too many details...the movie is all to do about a woman( Simran) who gets trapped into a situation where she has to make a choice between the gangster( Daya ) who rescued her from the dinginess of a dance bar, whom she dreamt of having a life with, who is on the constant run saving himself from the law keepers, who of course who loves her, who strays away from his mentor( Khan ) for her....and the other a next door guy( Aakash )..who becomes her closest confidante, life support, rescuer in the absence of Daya...who promises her the secure life that she never got from Daya...
Turn of events eventually lead her to make the wrong choice.... The rest is for you to find out....
The movie goes into the present and the past..and has nested flashback sequences that dont confuse the viewer at all..very sensitively shot...the story unfolds with a flow...has a couple of broken links...which keep the viewer interested....the story reaches its full circle in the end...the songs are well organised and timely ...the movie doesnt make you laugh at all....rather can get you all weepy...
Dialogues are few considering it is a 2 hour movie with 4 songs in between...not very impressive though...few of them sound absurd for the situation..but one realises in the end why they sounded that way.
Debutante Kangana Ranaut( Simran ) is the beautiful face of the movie...quite unlike the regular porcelain faces she has come up with some good show of emotions on-screen and her dialogues(overdoing them at times)...she has a long way to go....
Shiney Ahuja( Daya )...has hardly 3-4 dialogue sequences in his pocket...but his rendition does not live upto the "best debutante of year" award....expressionwise very impressive...one scene towards the end of the movie definitely strikes the right chord...
Emran Hashmi has thankfully not overdone his part...a neat performance in all senses.
Anurag Basu's direction and presentation is commendable...that makes the movie different from the regular ones...though the story is not all that unusual.
The soundtrack by Pritam doesnt let you down...a chartbuster for sure....Bheegi Bheegi takes the cake for the rendition as well as music plus lyrics...Ya Ali( has a sufi touch which is the "in" thing in the music circle) and Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai are equally good...all three songs are laced by some fine lyrics
Wont call the movie a must watch...but if your game for a movie...GANGSTER is worth a peek and is definitely watchable...not recommended to the weak/faint/broken hearted and those who are going through the not so bright side of life.

My ratings
Movie : ***
Star Cast : **1/2
Soundtrack : ***1/2
Story/Script : ***
Dialogues : **

Hmm sounds like a good movie (didn't read the full plot though, lemme watch it 1st :D ). Atleast I heard the songs and they're good. I'd die to watch something new/good after what I've done to myself over the WE
